It is with deep sorrow that we received the news of the passing of our dear Senior Advisor, Amália Ruth Borges Schmidt — a woman whose life journey is inseparably intertwined with the very history of strengthening the network of business and professional women in Brazil.

Her passing leaves an immense void, one that is difficult to fill. Yet, it also leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, built with vision, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the collective. Amália was one of the key figures in bringing BPW to Brazil, serving as the main architect of its foundation, officially established on August 17, 1987, during the XVIII BPW International Congress held in The Hague, Netherlands. At that historic moment, Brazil secured its place on the international stage, and Amália already stood out as a member of the inaugural board, serving as Secretary with strong leadership and a clear sense of purpose.

Long before this milestone, her dedication had already distinguished her. In 1982, alongside other visionary leaders, she took on the challenge of revitalizing the movement in Brazil, driven by her firm belief in the transformative power of women’s unity. She was also one of the founders of BPW São Paulo, the first local association, and in 1986, as President, she led initiatives that strengthened and expanded the network, planting seeds that continue to flourish across the country to this day.

On the international stage, her presence was equally remarkable. Amália coordinated committees, served as a key liaison for Latin America and Spanish-speaking Caribbean countries, and rose to the position of Vice President of BPW International — always carrying with her the strength, competence, and representation of Brazilian women.

To speak of Amália is to speak of legacy. It is to recognize a woman who opened paths where none existed, who built bridges with generosity and determination, and who firmly believed that women’s leadership has the power to transform realities.

Today, her absence brings us profound sadness, but her life calls us forward. May her example continue to inspire generations to lead with purpose, to unite their efforts, and to move forward with courage.

Amália Ruth Borges Schmidt will remain alive in the hearts of every woman who had the privilege of knowing her and walking alongside her.
